(HEADCANON) Analyzing “The STARE,” and how it works
Join me as we enter headcanon territory and into the “Stare.” Today i will be analyzing and uncovering the stare’s mechanisms and how it works… or atleast how i think it does. We will discuss illusions and chaos, as well as discord.
[skip to the (HEADCANON) section for the theory]
Okay, this theory was brought up to me way back at the end of 2012 and during the time I discovered my love for analysis and theories! Back then I always thought of the stare as a character trait used only because it was “relevant” to the plot.
Trust me, in a world of magic and mystery it’s not my best to try and include logic in this… But since we know that there is such a thing as chaos and illusions that can be harnessed by magic in the place of equestria, I think i can use it as a part of my theory.
So it’s like this. Fluttershy has the ability and talent to communicate with animals, right? So then what’s the use of the stare? I mean really, her cutie mark was due to her her affection and talent to speak to woodland creatures so what up with the stare? All the other five main characters got their talent off a simple talent and only one talent! (They don’t just have ONE specific talent… you know what I mean) And fluttershy having two such big ones conflicts with whether or not her cutie mark should have butterflies. So what do I think?
I don’t believe that the stare is really anything, actually. I mean, if it were really a big talent wouldn’t the writers incorporate it into her past or a part of her life? I know the show can lack in continuity sometimes, but they know better than this!
It’s sort of like pinkie pie. She has a “talent” of knowing when something unordinary or unexpected might possibly happen. (Her pinkie sense) On that note, it’s more an ability than it is a talent. And both of these are most likely just traits the writers give them for the sake of making a show good.
But the fact it might just be for the sake of an episode won’t stop me now, because it’s headcanon time! Now i’m sure most of us have seen the stare in action, and it’s ability to manipulate the minds of animals and their actions. But how does it work?
Now let’s take a look at this for a second… This talent comes very close to one thing that some people claim to be able to do in real life. Hypnosis, maybe? An illusion to trick the mind? now i can’t prove this, but i can legitimize it.
So illusion right? A form of chaos that you can see. Something unnatural quite like the stare. But chaos isn’t just a thing in my little pony, it’s also a form of magic that probably only few can use. One of those few is Discord, part of the “draconequu’s” race. He can harness the power of chaos and use it on almost anything.
So how does “Discord” prove anything? Well Fluttershy used the stare on him once, didn’t she? And what did it do? Nothing, didn’t it? And why didn’t it? well, could it be, that if the stare is a form of hypnosis and illusion? And since discord is the embodiment of chaos and illusion, that it couldn’t have worked on him, In turn having him make a mockery of it?
It wouldn’t be too crazy to speculate that fluttershy can use illusions to hypnotize. Taking a look back to pinkie, she has a pretty psychic power herself. Being able to sense a falling object and anything that could happen. Even the magic of friendship has it’s place in the powers that ponies can have.
(Discord mocking the stare)
So could these illusions be the reasoning behind the stare Or could it be something else?
