The importance of wings and horns on OC’s (Mlp:FiM)
For my first pony post i would like to discuss my thoughts on the importance of wings/horns on o.c ponies as well as my o.c (Thésis)
First, this topic was brought up to me while watching K.p’s (Ilovekimpossiblealot) new video on “Earth pony o.c’s.” (Link in the in source below) She mentions a whole lot about the fail in numbers of earth pony o.c’s, but i am more interested in all o.c’s in general. I could care less about the lack of earth ponies, or why it’s important, what I want to discuss is the creativity and inspiration.
If you don’t already know (which you probably don’t) my o.c is a pegasus. Possibly the MOST common o.c type there is… But choosing pegasus whether it’s to look cool, or because they can fly isn’t enough for me! Because I am who I am, I always need legit and good reasons… No, i’m not being hypocritical. My reason for a pegasus was a complex decision, but i’ll get to that later…
So why is it that I don’t like generic reasons? because I CRAVE backstory and character! The mane six aren’t who they are because of their horns or wings, it’s something that adds on to their character/development.
- Rarity- Fashionista, generous… Her horn doesn’t add on to that, but it is a significant part of her character. She uses her horn for one of her best talents, and her horn was a large part of her giving her her cutie mark.
- Twilight- Magic prodigy, magic… Now Twilight is mostly who she is because of magic… Her horn HAS a very important part that plays in the character. Magic student of CELESTIA, crown element of harmony, studies, and practices the “arts.” Need i go on?
- Fluttershy- Animal caretaker, kind… Fluttershy’s wings have less meaning to her character and more to do with her development. she’s a pegasus that doesn’t fly! It’s not that she can’t, it’s that she won’t! She’s FlutterSHY. Her not being willing to fly is a big part of her shyness. her past, her present, her persona! It’s all because of fail of flight in “flight school,” barely hovers above ground, a grand total wing power of 2.3!!!
Now i could go on, and on about the rest of the characters (and i’ll post something up about it another time) but i think you all get the point. The wings, horns, and even without should be significant to the character. It’s not a fashion sense, it’s not a hobby, it’s not something you want. It’s destiny… And you have to make it SEEM like it’s fate that your pony has wings, or horns or… Whatever earth ponies have.
I had a tough time deciding between pegasus and unicorn. I think of myself as a “smart” and one to use magic, but i wanted it to be much, MUCH more. I settled on pegasus because sometimes I just want to be alone, and free. Go out into a meadow or lay in the fields. As for my o.c, when he’s alone… nothing to care or worry about he fly’s through the tall grass, and lays near the pond. but he doesn’t stray too far from the ground as, like me, he is extremely scared of hights… All his life he doesn’t try to dare what his friends do much of the time. They are high flyers, they got their heads stuck in the clouds and “push to the top.” not all of them are pegasi, but they all have the same adventurous sense. Thésis doesn’t take to the skies a whole lot, and would rather hang back and let his friends have fun while he follows behind. Thésis’s wings represent my inner freedom. His lack of flight represents my lack of outside freedom. My pony and i are daydreamers, free on the inside but not on the out…
I believe all ponies should have a personal connection with themselves, whether it be their pony or not. I feel everyone should have a big part of themselves incarnated into their o.c’s and should really take the time to think about it. Doing it because “pegasus can fly” “Unicorns can use magic” or even because “Earth ponies are athletic” doesn’t cut it for me. everyone has something they need to express within them, so why not express themselves in the form of a pony o.c?
This has been my blog on o.c’s, and thank you for reading. hopefully this is something i will be doing more often, and i’d like to thank “Past analysis” and “Whammy reviews” for the advice as well as my friends for the support, and luckily this will only take off from here.
